High Performance Computing for BIO726P Master’s Students

On Thursday October 2, from 2pm to 5pm at Queen building, 83 students from the MSc in Bioinformatics (BIO726P) participated in a hands-on High Performance Computing (HPC) training session at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), using the Apocrita HPC cluster. The session began with an interactive Menti poll to gauge students’ prior knowledge of HPC and Apocrita. Menti provided an anonymous and engaging way to collect responses. We asked seven basic questions, including: “What does HPC mean?”, “What is a cluster at QMUL?”, "Have you ever used an HPC cluster before?", and one of the most thought-provoking:

The Storage Workshop

On May 16, 2025, Peter Childs, Daniel Howard and Julita Inca ran a storage workshop at QMUL. The purpose was to educate QMUL researchers in storing and securing access to their data which is a critical part of their daily research. We outlined the methods available to achieve this.

High Performance Computing for the Blizard Institute

On May 7, 2025, from 2pm to 5pm in the Sofa Room at Dept, researchers from the Blizard Institute advanced their understanding of Apocrita, the High Performance Computing cluster at Queen Mary University of London. The hybrid session included six participants in person and four joining online via Microsoft Teams. A group photo was taken during a coffee break, showcasing their enthusiasm and new souvenirs.

First IT Student's Festival

On April 11, 2025, we held the very first IT Students’ Festival at the Mile End Library at Queen Mary University of London. The event was a great success, offering us a valuable opportunity to engage directly with students, answer their questions, and deliver a seminar series on key IT topics.
