High Performance Computing for the School of Business and Management

A virtual workshop was delivered for training on High Performance Computing (HPC) on Friday 14, July 2023 and on Friday 21 July 2023. We held the online event for 13 researchers from the School of Business and Management (SBM). Thanks to the coordination of Professor Roxana Gutierrez and to the support of Tom King, Simon Butcher and Vitaly Kukchenkov, we covered the basics of HPC skills including applying for an HPC account, launching an HPC job, applications of SBM and how to request GPUs.

Agenda (First session)

  • What is the High Cluster Performance computer Apocrita?
  • How to create your Apocrita account?
  • Create a private and public SSH key
  • Configuration of MobaXterm

Agenda (Second session)

  • How to send files to Apocrita from local device
  • Writing and launching a HPC job script
  • How to load different software packages in Apocrita (MATLAB, Stata 18, Python, R)
  • How to request a use of a GPU node

Audience

The researchers of the SBM school uses MacOS and Windows as operating system. We helped them each to follow all the instructions using Linux in Apocrita, including the use of HPC array job scripts. We highlighted the use of the official documentation and recommended visiting our channel on Youtube to follow the technical instructions regarding the use of Apocrita. We also recommended contacting us in case of any Apocrita issues by raising a ticket at ITS-Research

Feedback

This workshop session was fully recorded by Professor Roxana Gutierrez, to share with the members of her who were not present and for future researchers under her supervision. She sent an email to express her thanks to our ITS-Research team for supporting her team for more than six hours. From our end, we also appreciated her dedication in arranging this online event.

You can find all the slides of the session here. Special thanks for reviewing the material to Tom King, Simon Butcher and Vitaly K.
